JANUARY 2018

Thank you for spreading the Gospel in Haiti and helping to create better lives. This last year has been a busy one for Vine Ministry. The Church in Port-au-Prince continues to be a vibrant and growing church. The foundation was laid 25 years ago through the labor of LeRoy and Evelyn Dick and Pastor Joel St Amour. Remembering back to when they met in a small store front building, where the quarters were cramped and over crowded, to now where there is plenty of space for this growing congregation of 650 members. During our visit in August, we were blessed by this congregation. Listening to several choirs and the 5 person worship team, worshiping with them was a wonderful experience, feeling the presence of God among us.

The church continues with less direct help from the United States but still needs your help to support Associate Pastor Daniel Telfort (photo above) and his family. Pastor Daniel has his hands full with this large congregation and teaching at STEP, the seminary in Port-au-Prince. He is still involved in translating the Old Testament into Creole, a slow, careful and critical project. Please consider giving for General Fund as this supports Pastor Daniel, travel to Haiti and repair of our car in Haiti, maintaining our home office and many needs as they arise.

We are so looking forward to seeing many of you this spring. From May 6 through May 20, we will be visiting churches. Please fill out this request form and return to us as soon as possible so we can put together our itinerary. All we ask is lodging (either motel or home), a room for Jim and Jo and a room for Evelyn. (Due to allergies, please no pets in the house). An offering for the ministry would be wonderful and helpful. Please return by March 15, 2018.

Thank you for your prayers and gifts throughout 2017.

Blessings of health and prosperity in this new year of 2018.

DECEMBER 2017

Listen! A virgin will be pregnant, she will give birth to a Son, and he will be known as “Emmanuel,” Which means in Hebrew, “God became one of us.” Matt 1:23 PT

Merry Christmas! God came to earth as a man and our hearts filled to overflowing with His perfect love.

This last year has been a busy year full of activity and growth. The Board of Directors of Vine Ministry met at our house on November 3rd to look over the last year and consider direction for the coming year. We are happy to have accepted Bonnie Golden as our newest Board Member. We look forward to her insight and wisdom in the coming years.

We are grateful for Evelyn’s health. Last Christmas she experienced severe pain while visiting her daughter Susan. She was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with gall bladder problem and pancreatitis. She immediately had surgery which was very successful. Her recovery went well as she enjoyed her time with family.

It is with great joy and thanksgiving we were able to place 167 students in school this last August. This probably has the greatest impact on our brothers and sisters in Haiti. As a child learns to read, write and think critically, their life begins to change dramatically for the better. Education gives the opportunity for better jobs and better understanding of their world around them.

The biggest impact in our lives is to know and love Jesus. Vine Church has been training for evangelization throughout this fall. In November, members of Vine Church went in the surrounding areas, telling others of God’s wonderful love. Please pray for these neighborhoods.

In just a few weeks, we will be taking a new Ultrasound machine to Haiti. It will be in operation in the Clinique Medicale LeRoy Dick, the Clinic at Vine Church. As many as 6 staff will be trained to use it and diagnose patients. Thank you for your kind and generous support for this project as the quality of health care just increased to a new level through this piece of medical equipment.  We are at 84% of our goal with $3847 to go to complete the initial stage of this project. Our need today is to have the Ultrasound machine covered 100%. Please consider helping with this need.

Our many thanks for the help you have given to Pastor Daniel and his wife Ann in the care of their daughter, Hadassah. Hadassah was born with many health issues at birth. She is blind, deaf and cannot speak. She is six years old and still cannot walk or hold herself upright. Through our supporter’s help, Pastor Daniel and Ann have continuous care assistance for her. Praise the Lord!

Thank you for supporting this ministry with prayer and finances bringing life giving change to our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

NOVEMBER 2017

As the holiday season approaches we are thankful for many things, namely you who have joined with us faithfully through the months and years. Whenever there has been a need such as education for children, a church that needs built, a wall that needs repaired you have always responded with immediate and generous support.

For example, you have responded overwhelmingly with support for the mothers, children and families of Vine Church and Port-au-Prince area. We have ordered the ALPINION E-CUBE i7, an extremely durable Ultra Sound machine for the Clinique Medicale LeRoy Dick at the Vine Church. Vine Ministry started with $7000. You have added $19,618. Thank you all for seeing the need and responding.

In January Connie Ambrecht and Sparrow Solutions Group will install this machine and train six staff. By the end of the 4th day of training they will have the ability to scan patients and use their expertise to quickly diagnose. In Haiti, 60 out of 1000 pregnancies end in death. Compared to the United States only 6 of 1000 end in death. This particular machine is perfectly suited for our situation due to limited space and the unique environment in which we are housed. This unit is portable, about the size of a carry on, can be moved from room to room or taken into the country when our Doctors travel to remote areas of Haiti. If service is required, we can easily take it back to the United States. Go to vineministry.org if you would like to see a video of Connie introducing this medical device. I hope everyone will consider the part they can play in the future of the medical clinic and the health of Vine Church and their community.

In October, Associate Pastor Daniel and the leaders of Vine Church trained the members of the church for outreach into their communities. They have planned for this outreach in the months earlier by dividing their communities into geographical areas. November is the time they will share in their communities telling their neighbors about Jesus and what He has done in their life.
We were graciously received at Upper Claar Church of the Brethren in Claypool, PA Sunday morning October 22. What a wonderful time of fellowship and connecting with friends; many have known LeRoy and Evelyn through the years. Eugene Harbaugh, Pastor Dave Maxwell, visiting Pastor Larry Grabill and the congregation made us feel exceptionally welcome.

Sunday evening we met with the Anne Ashley United Methodist Church in Munhall, PA including a group from Indiana, PA Trinity United Methodist. We enjoyed reconnecting and sharing stories, pictures and video from our trip to Haiti this last August. Most from this group have been going to Haiti helping with many projects over the last 20 years. This evening was encouraging and confirming the work of Vine Ministry in Haiti.

Thank you all for your continued prayer for the people of Haiti. God is at work in their midst. Please pray for spiritual support during this time of outreach for doors to be open and hearts ready to receive the greatest gift of Jesus for mankind, especially during the upcoming Christmas season. Pray for families, for health, for safety, for provision. Please pray that the next generation falls in love with Jesus and their eyes will see every good thing that Haiti is and is called to be. Father God is personally involved and has a plan to bless and prosper them.

Thank you for your continued generous support in prayer and finances.

OCTOBER 2017

The death of an infant is a tragic event for moms, dads, brothers and sisters. In the US, 6 out of every 1000 births results in a death. In Haiti, this tragedy happens for 48 infants out of every 1000 births.   The staff of Clinique Medicale LeRoy Dick (this is the name of the Clinic at Vine Church as it is said in Creole) feel it is of great importance to be able to serve their patients with quality care in a timely manner. A tool for quick and accurate diagnosis and care for moms with child is the ultrasound, giving a clear picture of baby’s position and ongoing development.

The moms being cared for in Clinique Medicale LeRoy Dick must go to a hospital or other facility away from the Clinic to obtain an ultra sound of their baby. Before an ultra sound is performed, payment must be made to the hospital.

Our problem is the pregnant mom must travel the streets of Port-au-Prince AND provide payment. Most Haitians are not able to do this and therefore do not get the treatment they need to properly care for their unborn child. This is a major reason infant mortality is so high in Haiti.

The Dr. Mirhioll and the staff at Clinique Medicale LeRoy Dick have requested that our efforts be put toward acquiring an Ultrasound machine so patients may be diagnosed quickly and accurately especially for neonatal patients. We have decided to purchase a high-quality machine from ALPINION.

Alpinion E-Cube i7

Installation and training for using and diagnosing with this machine is graciously provided through Sparrow Solutions Group. They will continue to support our staff for up to 3 years so they become completely comfortable with this medical device. We will need to provide room and board for them the days they are in Haiti.

The cost for this project, Alpinion E-Cube i7, installation and training is estimated at $24,100. From donations on hand for the clinic, Vine Ministry will begin this project with $7000. Our outstanding need is $17,100.

Please consider helping with this wonderful addition to medical care in Haiti. Our goal is to deliver this Ultrasound machine in January 2018.

Several of these great students have graduated from University. We would like to introduce one graduate to you this month. This is a great accomplishment so let’s rejoice with her.

JoAnnie Volcy has graduated from Christ the King Secretarial School, a most prestigious secretarial school in Haiti. Graduates from this school are highly sought for hire in companies throughout Haiti. She is very happy with her accomplishment.

JoAnnie Volcy is pictured here with her father, Joel Volcy, Evelyn Dick, Jim and Jo Dick

Please accept our heartfelt thanks for all of your prayers and financial support.

SEPTEMBER 2017

Our hearts are blessed. We have seen and spoken to all supported students and their families this week. Almost all the students from last year are continuing this year. 158 students will now be attending school this year. 11 have graduated and did not return. A few have left the country because their family sought work in other areas, and a few students will be attending University. Photos of the students, if you supported a child, will soon be sent to you.

Please enjoy the photographs of the trip this year. Amy Self from West Goshen Church of the Brethren, a talented photographer, captured the joy of the students while Jo Dick assisted her. These two ladies quickly made the children feel comfortable. Additional photos can be found on Facebook through Amy Self, Jo Dick, James Dick or Evelyn Dick

We were able to visit with Pastor Daniel and his wife Ann at their home. All of us were thankful for the 4-wheel drive vehicle as the terrain was difficult. Daniel and Ann are very gracious hosts and their children a blessing. While there, we looked at the roof where we would like to put solar panels to provide electricity. We do not have enough funds for this project yet, but money designated for Daniel’s solar power will go directly to this project.

Our greatest thanks to you for supporting these children for school.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you as we travel to churches this fall October 22 through 29. If you would like us to visit with your church or mission group, please email the following details to Jimandjo.geo@yahoo.com by September 15your contact information, church name & address, Pastor’s name & phone number, and three dates of your choosing (between October 22nd & October 29th) (we will confirm the date we are able to accommodate).

AUGUST 2017

Over the Moat – Drawbridge to the King was the theme for Blue River Church of the Brethren’s Vacation Bible School. 56 children were enrolled for this wonderful program. The mission out reach this year was Vine Ministry and the Clinic at Vine Church in Haiti. They raised $3400 for the Clinic. Thank you for your gift as it will provide health to people of Haiti many times over.

West Goshen Church of the Brethren hosted a worship event July 17th. Betsey Long, a local Nashville recording artist, along with other musicians and vocalists led us in an evening of worship and praise to Jesus. They responded to the call and helped Haiti with $2777.  Thank you for your gracious heart to continue touching lives in Haiti.

The Clinic at Vine Church in Haiti has taken a step in a new direction. It has been on the hearts of several to serve those who are handicapped. The Clinic is providing assistance for Pastor Telfort’s daughter. As this project grows, more help will be provided and more handicapped individuals will receive care. To the best of our knowledge, there are no hospitals who treat and care for mentally and physically handicapped. Please keep this project in mind as you consider your help for Haiti.

Please keep us in your prayers as we travel to Haiti on August 14. We, Jim and Jo and Evelyn will be staying until the 27th. During this time we will register the kids for school. Amy Self of West Goshen COB will join us on August 19 to help take those precious pictures of the students.  We cannot thank Amy enough for her willingness to help. Our hearts are over whelmed with gratitude as you, our friends, have expressed commitment to bringing hope to Haiti one child at a time. By the time we leave for Haiti our goal will be met of at least 155 students in school this year.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you as we travel to churches this fall. From October 22nd through the 29th we may be in your area. If you would like us to visit with your church or mission group, please email the following details to Jimandjo.geo@yahoo.com by September 15: your contact information, church name & address, Pastor’s name & phone number, and three dates of your choosing (between October 22nd & October 29th) (we will confirm the date we are able to accommodate). We ask for one night’s lodging with someone in your congregation or in a hotel/motel. Jim and Jo will need a room and Evelyn will need a room. Also, please, due to allergies no pets in the house. We greatly appreciate any offerings given to the ministry.

Without your support we would not be able to continue. God Bless You Richly!

JULY 2017

Children in Haiti are looking forward to attending school this fall. Yet only about half of them will be able to attend. For most, help from you is absolutely necessary for them to be able to continue to attend. School will change their life and open the door to many opportunities to bless their family their parents never had.

Thank you for your continued support. We are finalizing dates of travel to Haiti to register these children for this fall’s school year. Please pray for each student and their family for God to especially touch their life this year. If you have not sponsored your student for next year, please let us know before August 1st so we know how many students our supporters will be able to help. So far we are at 60% of last year’s total.

We recently enjoyed a wonderful time of friendship and collaboration in Grand Rapids, MI as we sat around the table and discussed ideas and plans for working with Vine Evangelical Baptist Church. Pastor Joel St Amour and his wife Marie, Jo and Jim Dick, Evelyn Dick and Associate Pastor Daniel Telfort were all present. Some of the topics of discussion was help for Telfort’s daughter Hadassa. Hadassa is disabled and becoming more difficult to care for. She is 6 years old and still cannot stand, walk or talk. The need for either a generator or solar power at Pastor Daniel’s home was also considered. He has money saved for this but still needs the remaining funds to make the purchase. The Clinic is in need of being fully equipped.  We are also considering how to begin a Christian school that will teach the children well.

If you are in the Goshen, IN area, please come to West Goshen Church of the Brethren for an evening of Spirit Filled Praise and Worship. Betsey Long, a Nashville recording artist, will be leading us into His Presence.

We would love to connect with the supporters of Vine Ministry to renew old friendships and make new ones.

We want to share how Vine Ministry is growing. Would you be available to host us in your church or small group?

Our plans are to travel and be available October 22 through 29.

Please contact me at PO Box 967, Goshen, IN 46527 by August 1 so we can begin finalizing plans.

JUNE 2017

It is so fun to hear what the Vine Ministry Student Sponsorship graduates are doing now. Some have graduated nursing school. Another graduated secretary school. The secretary of Vine Evangelical Baptist Church was one of the first students supported by you.  Vine Ministry Supporters have impacted education in Haiti for over 26 years. Last year 155 students had the opportunity to attend school.

As can be seen from the chart, we have a very good start to meeting our goal from last year. In May our supporters have committed to sending 74 students to school again for another year of education.

If you would like to be part of this project, please drop us a line and let us know you would like to support a student this year. One year is $360. The Deadline is August 1st.

Sunday April 30 Assoc. Pastor Daniel took the Central Choir from Vine Evangelical Baptist Church to his hometown of Hinche.

Pastor Daniel preached and Central Choir sang at Maranatha Baptist of Hinche. Later in the evening they ministered in Hinche First Baptist Church. This is where Pastor Daniel grew up and had his first experiences as Youth Leader and Choir Director.

Pastor Daniel also had the privilege of visiting and preaching in a church in a village called Maissade, about 260 miles from Port-au-Prince. To get there he had to cross a large river. Pastor hired a young man to carry him on his back to cross the river. He did such a good job of carrying Daniel that he paid him double the wage.

Please note several prayer requests:

Haiti’s economy. Inflation rate is 12%. 1 Haitian Gourde is now worth 1.496 cents.

Hadassa is Pastor Daniel’s 6 year old daughter. She is disabled and does not stand, walk, see or talk. She is becoming more difficult to care for.

Please pray for continued improvement for Marie St Amour, Pastor Joel’s wife who received a heart transplant last October.

Please join Vine Evangelical Baptist Church in praying for the upcoming Bible Conference June 25 –July 9. This is their 25th year celebration with many former members coming to take part in the celebration.

Thank you for your prayers and generous support to this ministry,

MAY 2017

This month’s newsletter is dedicated to our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather & friend LeRoy Dick. Many of us remember his love for the Lord and his family, dedication to the ministry, and his wit and humor. He began working in Haiti in 1981 and later founded Vine Ministry. He went to his heavenly home May 11, 2005.

Lacoste, a small village in South Haiti, was hit by Hurricane Matthew, and had not received medical assistance for 6 months. We are very proud of Dr. Mirhiol St Amour for meeting this need as she organized a mobile medical team to Lacoste to bring Christ’s love and compassion to this community.

Members of the team were Dr. Herby Mesadieu, Dr Lise Beverly Jean Philippe, Dr. Mirhioll Sue St Amour, Nurse Marie Erline, Pastor Wilnes Louis, a driver and a helper. Pastor Wilnes Louis has family in this area. They drove 4 hours from Port-au-Prince and walked 30 minutes over rough terrain to reach the village. This group of dedicated individuals was able to serve 107 people with medicine, medical consultations, food and clothing.

A huge thank you to you, the friends of Vine Ministry, for financially supporting this project along with the members of Vine Church in Haiti.

A special congratulations and thank you goes to Trinity United Methodist Church of Indiana, PA. Three years ago they began building a new church building in LaVictoire. They worked alongside the people of this congregation creating lasting friendships.  Last March they returned to add walls to this foundation. All that was needed was to finish the balcony. This year Trinity United Methodist Church raised the remaining amount of $11,200. They will not travel to Haiti but have sent the funds to the church in LaVictoire where the congregation will complete it on their own. Praise God for Your supply.

Thank you for praying for Evelyn’s knee surgery. She had a partial knee replacement on April 3. It went very well.  Since then she has been involved in rehabilitation. Evelyn is well on the way to regaining full use of her new knee without the arthritic pain she had been experiencing.

We want to thank you all individually for your faithful prayer and support for this ministry to Haiti. Without you we could not continue in this important work.

Blessings in Jesus’ boundless love,

APRIL 2017

Greetings,

Please pray with us as we plan and seek God for direction as to the next steps in the growth of the Clinic in Vine Church, Port-au-Prince Haiti. Your financial help is keeping it open three days a week and serving those who request help.  Medical care in Haiti is very different than what citizens in the United States are accustomed to. Following is a short example from the book Life on the Edge of LeRoy and Evelyn Dick’s experience with Haiti’s health care system.

“Very early one morning, our house boy, Gracis Leonel (who today works for our friends the Vervloets) who we had never met. She was obviously in anguish with labored breathing and swollen body. She could barely sit up. Gracis and his sister had brought her by tap-tap up the rough mountain road. After listening for a few minutes, we learned that she was 27, and given birth to a baby boy six weeks earlier, and had been sick for several days. As we prayed for her, we decided to take her to the clinic just down the road. In Haiti ambulance service as we know it is not available. So, even before breakfast, we put her in our car and LeRoy, myself, Gracis, Jesumeine (the sick cousin), and her sister headed down the narrow mountain road to the hospital in the village. The hospital only had one entrance, so LeRoy drove as close to the building as possible. From there, Gracis and Jesumeine’s sister carried her in since a wheelchair was not available. Gracis took care of the admission process. The medical staff admitted Jesumeine and began examining her. Each time they decided she needed something, Gracis came to LeRoy for money. “She needs oxygen…she needs a prescription…she needs an EKG…” In Haiti, nothing gets done until it is paid for up front. The following day, we returned to the hospital to locate the Doctor and learn what was causing Jesumeine’s problem. The Doctor took his time explaining that Jesusmeine had congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, and was anemic. She needed two units of blood. The procedure for obtaining blood for her transfusion had begun early that morning when Gracis arrived at the hospital with a cooler full of ice. There a hospital worker took Jesumeine’s blood sample and put it in the cooler. Gracis then had to take the blood, along with four blood donors to the Red Cross. They typed her blood and gave Gracis the transfusion blood to take back to the hospital- after the donors had given their blood. Jesumeine then received her transfusion.”

We are very grateful to God, Jesumeine’s baby, Steeven, has grown up. He is now in school being sponsored through Vine Ministry.

We are so thankful for all of you who gave specifically for the repair of the car $1094. We were in need of a flywheel including the clutch. The estimated cost was $4000. The car being a 2002 and a very limited diesel model, this price is reasonable.  It should soon be ready to go. Thank you.
